The Sutherland family 10 Sutherland Street, Helmsdale
My mum Jemima Sutherland used to live at 10 Sutherland Street, Helmsdale. My mum is the daughter of Sandy & Janet Sutherland (maiden name McDonald). Mum has a sister Bella who now lives in Edzell, Brother Alister who has now moved back to Helmsdale, Brother Duncan who lives in Dundee and brother Andy who recently died, lived in Nottingham.
As a family we spent nearly every summer holidaying in Helmsdale and I have very happy memories of the village. It is now some 30 years since I have visited Helmsdale but fortunately a number of my relatives do visit and keep me informed of what's happening.
Recently I asked a number of relatives whether they had any old photographs relating to the village. I've managed to get a few which may be of interest to you.
My grandfather Sandy used to work the salmon boat which he did until after his 80th birthday. How he did it 'til that age I have no idea. There were no outboard motors then everything was oar powered.
