Young Driver – Angus Flett of Dunrobin Street

Young Driver – Angus Flett of Dunrobin Street is through to the final of the Press and Journals' Young Driver of the Year competition, with a chance of winning a new Seat Ibiza Sport car.

Angus (23), a barman at the Belgrave Arms Hotel, is one of four finalists and the winner will be announced on June 7 at the Taste of Grampian Motor Show.

The competition reached its climax last week when 12 young drivers were put through their paces at the Knockhill Racing Circuit, including driving on a skid pan, a manoeuvrability course, the racing track itself, and on roads in the surrounding area. They were judged by instructors from Knockhill's Centre for Driver excellence and the Grampian Police's driver training unit. They also got the opportunity to go for an hour-long assessment with a Class 1 police driving instructor.

On Wednesday, the four finalists were announced and they must now and wait to hear who the winner is.

Angus, the son of Ruth and the late George Flett, said: "The skid pan was good but I learned more from the police driver which is going to make me much more aware when I'm driving. The highlight for me was going round the racing track. It has been a very worthwhile experience and I'm definitely going to go on and take my advanced driving test."
